What is a CAPA?
And what does it mean for me?
CAPA stands for Corrective Action, Preventive Action.
CAPAs initiate action plans that focus on reducing or eliminating causes of nonconformances, defects, or human error.
CAPAs should be viewed as an opportunity to improve current processes.
What do I need to know?
Building a CAPA system means we're starting a process to help us understand the problems or issues (errors) occurring within the organization, assess the root cause, and develop plans to implement corrective and preventive actions.
Corrective Action. The actions that immediately contain an error to prevent further exposure.
Preventive Action. The medium to long-term actions that focus on reducing or eliminating a recurrence of the same error.
CAPAs require us to perform root cause analysis (RCA) and understand the true root cause before trying to solve problems. Insufficient analysis can lead to inadequate solutions. Inadequate solutions are not profitable for organizations. A good RCA upfront instills confidence in the improvement plan and reduces the risk of shortfalls down the line.
